Captain Steven Cooney commissioned into the United States Marine Corps in 2008 and was assigned as an Intelligence Officer. His initial operational tour was with Second Radio Battalion, Camp Lejeune North Carolina, where he served in numerous command and staff positions. The highlight of this tour was an 8 month deployment as a detachment commander to Afghanistan in 2011. In 2012 he was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps where he led a science and technology project before becoming the Assistant to the Director of Intelligence. Since 2014 he has been on a personnel exchange with the British Ministry of Defence. Captain Cooney is a certified Project Manager and a graduate of the University of Virginia where he did a double degree in Economics and History. In addition to his professional commitments he is also a part-time graduate student at Cambridge University.
